In bushcraft and in life, resilience isn’t about never falling — it’s about how we rise, adapt, and learn from the experience. Just as we prepare for unpredictable weather or shifting terrain, we can also prepare our minds and spirits to handle life’s challenges with confidence and calm.


The 7 C’s of Resilience offer a practical framework — seven building blocks that strengthen our capacity to bounce back, grow, and thrive. Whether you’re leading a team, raising a family, or finding your way through personal challenges, these principles help shape what we at Everyday Bushcraft call The Everyday Way — the mindset of staying capable, connected, and calm no matter what life throws at you.


1️⃣ Competence – Skill Builds Confidence

Resilience starts with competence — knowing you have the tools to handle what comes your way. In the bush, that might mean knowing how to tie a knot, build a shelter, or light a fire. In life, it’s the same principle: the more capable you become, the less you fear the unknown. Every skill learned — practical or emotional — strengthens your foundation for growth.


2️⃣ Confidence – Believe You Can

Once competence is built, confidence follows. Confidence isn’t arrogance — it’s the quiet belief that you can find a way forward. Like mastering fire-making after a few smoky failures, confidence grows through experience, not perfection. It’s the spark that keeps you trying even when conditions aren’t ideal.

6️⃣ Coping – Managing Stress the Healthy Way

In bushcraft, coping might mean adapting your plan when the rain sets in. In life, it’s managing your emotions when pressure builds. Coping is about using healthy strategies — deep breathing, exercise, reflection, or reaching out for support — to stay balanced when things get tough. It’s not avoiding stress, but learning to work with it.

Perhaps the most empowering C of all, control is the understanding that while you can’t change everything, you can always choose your response. It’s the mindset of responsibility — taking charge of your thoughts, decisions, and direction. In the field or in life, control turns chaos into clarity.
